Miss Money Penny

I spent the entire long weekend taking photos left and right (and will post some of another shoot I did later in the week), but of all the photos I took, none compare to this one of Miss Money Penny in her raincoat. She is so proud of that coat.

Watchful Roux

Roux still hasn't really exhibited all the watchful/protective traits people told us to expect with a Ridgeback. Instead of looking like a force to contend with, she comes off as more of an overly exuberant pal to just about everyone. However, she has recently taken up the hobby of guarding the front door. She's still not a very threatening entity, but she feels like she's doing her guard dog duty if she spends at least 5 minutes a day standing watch.

Lately I really love photos that have a sense of motion like this, especially motion escaping out the frame.

These are from a shoot I did a while ago, but I've been editing some extra photos for the client and was reminded of these that are my own favorites.

black and white dogs are particularly photogenic

I spent two solid hours in the backyard last night watching Roux and our friends' 6 month old Bordie Collie, Grady, interact. I tend to think watching dogs play is pretty entertaining in and of itself, but it's especially hilarious to watch Roux interact with the only other dog she's ever met who acts like more of a puppy than she does. Grady pulls out all the stops - digging her needle sharp puppy teeth into the side of Roux's face and holding the vice grip as long as possible, paw-slapping her to get her attention, and making sure her body is directly in contact with Roux's at all times. Roux participates willingly, but every now and there is just a twinge of annoyance in her expression. And that's how I know Roux is growing up.

I've been trying to play with different techniques a little bit.

Perspective, for one.

Motion, for another. I love the way photos taken in motion like this look like paintings. I also love the sequence of these three photos; the little guy always trying to keep up with the big guy. Probably something every younger sibling can relate to.

Roux

I think the natural first post for this blog is one about Roux. I got my Canon when Roux was about five months old - and ever since I've been taking almost daily photos of her. Luckily she loves it. Any time the camera comes out of the case, Roux comes a runnin'. Even as a little puppy she was happy to sit in front of the camera for multiple shots.


I get plenty of opportunity to practice different techniques and ideas with Roux, and as a result could probably fill books upon books of all the Roux photos. It might be a little much, but that's okay - I'm a believer in documentation.
